Beer #102 - Birra del Borgo / ReAle

Beer #102 - W/C 6 February 2017

BREWERY // Birra del Borgo brewery is situated in Borgorose, a small village in the mountains of Lazio, central Italy. Leonardo di Vincenzo decided to abandon his academic studies in Biochemistry in favour of starting a brewery after discovering the real ales of England- a flavour revelation in comparison to the majority of Italian beers around in the early 2000's. Each year in early June enthusiasts come together in Borgorose to celebrate Birra del Borgo Day with great music, food and beer.

BEER // ReAle Extra is riff on Birra del Borgo's classic ReAle which was the brewerie's first beer, heavily inspired (as you may deduce from the name) by the classic 'real ale' IPA's of England. The Extra version contains three times the amount of hops, added in the final 10 minutes of the boil to make for a beer 80% more bitter than the original. Upon pouring you'll be met with a big aroma of grapefruit, peach and passionfruit. The intense bitterness is balanced with a caramel sweetness from the malt and lots of citrus, pine and earthy hop flavour. Like last week's My Antonia, we found this to be awfully more-ish. Saluti!
