Beer Jerk. Funk Estate - Doozy from Beer Jerk on Vimeo.
BREWERY // Shigeo, Jordan and Dylan were young Wellington beer enthusiasts who got together to drink and to brew collaboratively. It was pretty much inevitable that Funk Estate Brewery would grow from this friendship and shared love of beer. Four years later they are doing what they set out to do- "pleasing crowds without being a typical crowd-pleaser". Following their success at the Brewers Guild last year (where they scored a stack of medals) they made a move up to Auckland's Great North Road where they are cranking up production, embracing cans, working on new beers and (I'm hoping) planning to open a tap room soon.
TASTING NOTES // Doozy was brewed specifically for the annual Queenstown NZIPA Challenge held at Smiths. It is a classic NZIPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and a lot of Rakau hops which is where the stone fruit characteristics come from. Interestingly the Rakau variety of hop was only released in 2007 and it appears to havejust been discovered by our American cousins. We think Doozy is a delicious, easy drinking IPA with the perfect balance of hop bitterness and malt sweetness and body. It was bottled exclusively for Beer Jerk members. After some very positive feedback (I presume from Brent and me) they decided to release Doozy in cans which come out this week. Hear what the brewer has to say in the video below.
