BREWERY // Seven years ago Shigeo, Jordan and Dylan were young Wellington beer enthusiasts who got together to drink and to brew collaboratively. It was pretty much inevitable that Funk Estate Brewery would grow from this friendship and shared love of beer. After brewing in Wellington and Auckland they now have a beautiful home in Mt Maunganui. The the best place to drink Funk beers (other than your sofa) is right next door to the brewery at The Rising Tide pub. Look out for some new Funk Estate seasonals coming out for Beervana.
Brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and Karl van Buuren started Moon Dog in 2010 with a plan to brew “Really Ridiculously Fun Beer”. Their original Melbourne brewery was built up bit by bit with the help of eBay. Still proudly independent, they have seen huge growth in the past few years but retain their original spirit. Their first brew kit is now used for small seasonal brews in their brewery bar while a shiny big kit next door is used for most of their beers. They are currently building a gigantic 1 hectare brewery across town in Preston, Melbourne. We can't wait to visit when it opens later this year, it will incorporate a waterfall, lagoon and rainforest. Seriously.
BEER // When the Moon Dog team last visited New Zealand, we took them to see a handful of our favourite local breweries. A collaboration with Funk Estate was a natural fit as both breweries have a similar, irreverent sense of humour and flavour focussed approach to recipe creation. They put their minds together to create an Old School inspired Hazy IPA with a lot of blueberries and lemongrass. The blueberries and slightly sweet malt bill give the beer a slight essence of blueberry pie along with a slightly odd colour. The lemongrass works with the Galaxy and Denali hops which results in slightly bitter, herbal, citrus flavours.
