Beer #204 - Moon Dog / Beer Can

Beer #204 - W/C 21 January 2019

BREWERY // Moon Dog do not understand the meaning of 'moderation'. Their beers are created under the benevolent gaze of John Candy (in the form of a beautiful painting) and a ceiling of dodgy looking chandeliers. Brothers Josh and Jake Uljans and Karl van Buuren started Moon Dog in 2010 with a plan to brew “Really Ridiculously Fun Beer”. Their Melbourne brewery is equidistant between Carlton United Breweries and the Duchess brothel and was originally built up bit by bit with the help of eBay. Parts from seaweed-based cosmetics production sit alongside an open fermentation tank from Wagga Wagga which hadn’t been used in 80 years. They’ve used a stock feed crusher as a grain mill and dairy milk vats as brewing tanks. Still proudly independent, they have seen huge growth in the past few years but retain their original spirit. Their original brew kit is now used for small seasonal brews with a shiny big kit being used for most of their beers. Stop by the brewery on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon for a free tour.

BEER // While the Moon Dog team were perfecting a recipe for the perfect beer to enjoy on a beautiful warm day, they asked their in-house designer to knock up a can design. They made a design with the words 'Beer Can' as a placeholder. After seeing how good it looked, they decided to take that as the name. Beer Can is an "extremely drinkable tinny" of Mexican lager with ramped up hops and juicy tropical fruit notes from the addition of cold pressed peach, mango and passionfruit juice. This masterfully made, easy drinking beer is a world away from ubiquitous, bland green bottle lagers and an awesome example of the new generation of craft lagers that some believe are going to usurp IPA as the dominant style.
