Beer #169 - W/C 21 May 2018
BREWERY // Urbanaut are Bruce, Simon and Thomas who became friends during their days at Rangitikei College. Brewer Bruce honed his craft working with legendary breweries Fullers and Meantime in London before working as a brewery consultant upon his return to New Zealand. Simon and Thomas previously ran a property development company and their combined skills came in handy when converting an old warehouse building into a sparkling Kingsland brewery. Urbanaut are also contract brewing for some other awesome beer brands including Yeastie Boys. The brewery opened exactly a year ago and quickly became a hub for Kingsland beer fans who can sample beer fresh from the source and take away flagons. This Friday they're celebrating their first birthday with a party and you are invited - they've made a special beer and booked in the "raddest & baddest" to keep your ears as entertained as your mouths. Scroll down for info.
BEER // When Bruce told us he was brewing a sour lager we were intrigued. Urbanaut have brewed some of our favourite NZ lagers but we'd never heard of a sour lager, let alone one made with citrus fruit. Of course, this experimental brew turned out to be fantastic. It was kettle soured for 2 days with lactobacillus then brewed as a traditional lager with bottom fermenting yeast with the addition of oranges and mandarins to the fermenter. The result is a quaffable, clean, dry, citrus-y, fruity good time in a can. Check out the video with Bruce below to hear more about La Alameda.
