Beer #148 - To Øl / Black Ball

Beer #148 - W/C 25 December 2017

BREWERY // "Never compromise with taste"

To Øl are Tobias & Tore, two former high school students of Mikkel Borg Bjergsø (who went on to found Mikkeller) whose commitment to flavour saw the brewery voted 9th in the World on RateBeer in 2014. Their first beers were brewed alongside Mikkel in the school kitchen between 10pm and 6am on weekdays. We actually cannot think of a better teenage hobby and rue the countless hours wasted in guitar lessons and on muddy rugby pitches. All of their beers are unfiltered, unpasteurized and bottle conditioned. To Øl put 5-10% oats into every beer they make and claim that "is the secret behind the sexy haziness, body and mouthfeel, as well as good foam".

BEER // Black Ball is an intense, rich and potent porter with a round mouth feel combined with a lot of American hops. Its balanced, full and creamy in body with roasted malt aromas. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, cherries and smoke with hints of peat. Bitter with a nice dry finish, this smooth and creamy porter is interestingly bold, yet still drinkable.
Ingredients: Water, malt(pilsner, smoked, chokolade, cara munich, brown), roasted barley, flaked oat, dark cassanade sugar, hops (Simcoe, Centennial, Cascade) and yeast.
