Beer #52 - The Lover / The Shakespeare

Beer #52 - W/C 22 February 2016

BREWERY //
The Shakespeare Hotel on the corner of Albert & Wyndham Streets is an iconic Auckland institution, having being built in 1898 by Thomas Foley. In 1986, a brewery was installed in the pub making it New Zealand's first brew pub. For a period in recent history, new owners tragically decided to stop brewing on site and served only mediocre beer. Fortunately for us, The Shakespeare changed hands once more a couple of years ago and, once again, the emphasis is now firmly on making good beer. When you pop in, the staff are generally happy to show people around the brewery and you can even brew your own beer on site!

TASTING NOTES //
The Lover is a blonde ale in the English style. It is a showcase for Nelson Sauvin, the "Quintessential New Zealand" hop. This distinctive variety was released in 2000 and is a great dual purpose hop making it ideal for single hopped beers such as this. This blonde is a very crisp and clean beer and the gooseberry and passionfruit flavours from the Nelson Sauvin hops may remind the drinker of a white wine. But in a good way.
