Beer #37 - Funk Estate / Yes Yes Y'all

 Beer #37 - W/C 9 November 2015

BREWERY //

While none of the 3 guys at Funk Estate has an afro, they all sport rather fetching beards. Shigeo, Jordan and Dylan were young Wellington beer enthusiasts who got together to drink and to brew collaboratively. Inevitably Funk Estate was born, 3 and a half years later they are doing what they set out to do- "pleasing crowds without being a typical crowd-pleaser". It seems like the crowd at the Brewers Guild were pleased as they chucked a stack of medals at them this year. We've got a feeling they didn't give theirs away to the next kid who strolled past.

TASTING NOTES //

Not every record can be a number one hit. The same is true for beers- sometimes it is nice to drink a beer which isn't all that remarkable, one that is comfortable to do their duty while the superstars take the limelight.  Yes Yes Y'all wasn't brewed with chipotle chilliesValrhona cocoa nibs or coffee beans which have been through the digestive system of a civet cat. It wasn't dreamed up by a superstar chef and created in a collaboration between Japanese and New Zealand Breweries. Nor was it aged incognac barrels and it certainly doesn't have 200+ theoretical IBUs. With caramel and honey malt flavours matching the bitterness of NZ hops, Yes Yes Y'all is definitely tasty. It just doesn't cause a fuss about it.
