Beer #310 - Dugges / Little Tropic

Beer #310 - W/C 25 January 2021

BREWERIES // As with many breweries, the story of Dugges began with founder Mikael Dugge Engström sitting in a pub and thinking about how cool it would be to create his own beers. Dugges brewery opened in 2005 in Mölndal, near Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden and quickly started making waves around the world with their innovative and flavour packed beers.
Stillwater Artisinal Ales was started by former musician Brian “Stillwater” Strumke who discovered homebrewing as a new creative outlet after retiring from a career as a techno DJ and producer. He is driven to create beers that 'elicit emotion and inspire contemplation' and the brewery is a steady fixture in Top 100 lists. Stillwater functions as more of a living organism than a brewery with Strumke travelling the world collaborating with other brewers and gipsy-brewing.

BEER // Little Tropic is a perfect execution of a flavour packed, refreshing, super tropical, tart beer. Swedish brewers have perfected tasty low alcohol beers (which are known as Folköl) thanks to local liquor laws which dictate that any beers higher than 3.5% can only be sold in a special government owned monopoly of stores. Dugges & Stillwater lightly soured this beer with lactobacillus (a lactic acid producing bacteria) before fermenting it with massive amounts of passionfruit and mango. It has an almost surprising amount fruit salad on the nose and flavour to match. There's plenty of complexity to enjoy in this lower abv beer which pairs well with fatty foods.
