BREWERY // Following a 22,000 km road trip circumnavigating the USA and drinking countless beers, George Duncan & Wai Familton were inspired to start brewing. After several years of brewing fantastic beers in his kitchen and a few more years contract brewing, George opened a brewery in Paraparaumu on the beautiful Kapiti Coast with a cellar door (staffed by George and his sister). It's a true family business and George and Wai care looking forward to their 2 year old boy being big enough to start helping out around the brewery. The brewery has gone from strength to strength racking up plenty of medals and critical acclaim. When not brewing or pouring beer, you may spot George at various beer events- he's the guy with a huge grin and a sea-captain beard. Duncan's hypnotic labels are created by Dr. D Foothead and we've heard rumours that he tries to incorporate representations of genitalia into every label...
BEER // George first brewed this beer for Beervana 2019. In the wine world, the word 'Brut' indicates a very dry sparkling wine with a low amount of residual sugar. And so it is the same with beer. A couple of years ago a San Francisco brewer had an inspired idea to create a beer which was a different expression of the IPA style as a counter to the trend of Hazy IPAs coming out of the East coast. He added an enzyme (amylogucosidase) to his IPA wort which broke down the complex, non fermentable sugars. This resulted in the yeast having even more sugar to ferment into alcohol with the resultant beer being bone dry with no residual sweetness. Taking inspiration from a Mimosa (Champagne & OJ), Duncan's decided to take the Brut approach to a Pilsner. Using a light pilsner malt as a base, they added orange blossom water and Mandarina Bavaria hops. The result is super dry and crisp with light citrus aroma and flavours. It is a light, delicate, easy-drinking beer which belies it's 7% abv.
