Beer #92 - Northern Monk / Communion

Beer #92 - W/C 28 November 2016

BREWERY // Northern Monk are relatively new on the scene having only opened in late 2014. The Leeds based brewery have quickly established an excellent reputation for producing brilliant beers. As their name suggests, they take inspiration from the ancient tradition of brewing monks. During the 11th century the brothers at nearby Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire would produce 60 barrels of strong ale every 10 days. During a time when water was insanitary and tea & coffee yet to be introduced to England, ale was consumed with all meals. At the heart of Northern Monk is 'The Refectory', the brewery taproom & bottle shop with 18 taps an local, organic food. We're already planning a pilgrimage.

TASTING NOTES // This is a collaboration between Northern Monk and Opeth the Swedish heavy metal band and is named after their 2014 album Pale Communion. Opeth are not renowned for the their subtle and delicate tastes so it will be no surprise that Communion makes liberal use of American hops to bring a lot of noise. Head brewer Brian Dickson says "we have come up with an easy-drinking American Pale Ale with a solid U.K. malt backbone over which we layered lots of classic U.S. hop varieties, including Equinox and Citra. Expect pine, spice and all the punchy citrus you'd expect of the style; perfect gig refreshment!".
