Beer #111 - Weezledog / Dickledoi
Beer #111 - W/C 10 April 2017
BREWERY // Weezledog is Mark Jackman with a little help from his wife Marie (accounts) and daughter Ruby (moral support). Although he moved to New Zealand when he was just 10 years old, Mark's Yorkshire accent is as strong as ever and he has a real affinity for classic English styles. Like most brewers, he began as an enthusiastic home-brewer and, wonderfully, Mark shares the recipes for each beer in the range. He made his first beers after his father-in-law gifted him a home brew kit and quickly became enthusiastically involved in the Auckland beer community, creating a beer blog and becoming president of the Auckland Homebrewers Club. In 2014 Weezledog was officially born in West Auckland where Mark also moonlights as the head brewer for Black Sands. In case you were wondering, Weezledog is actually's Mark's pet name for Marie.
BEER // Dickledoi was Weezledog's first release and came at a time when many NZ beers were firmly focussed on championing hops. This Ruby Ale certainly has a bitter New Zealand hop finish but the real focus is on the malts. The malt bill includes biscuit, dark crystal and chocolate malts to make for a big and very rich beer with lots of biscuit, roasty, nutty, toffee flavours. You may also determine notes of berries and fruitcake. There are many layers to this beer which changes as it warms up. Keeping the naming ideas in the family- Dickledoi was toddler Ruby's name for her favourite little toy.
If you'd like to re-create Dickledoi yourself, here's the recipe. Just be sure to send Mark a bottle!
