Beer #61 - Deep Creek / Basilica
Beer #61 - W/C 25 April 2016
BREWERY // Over the past few years Deep Creek beers have earned their way into the hearts of beer fans on Auckland's North Shore and Waiheke Island thanks to their brewpubs in Brown's Bay, Orewa and Oneroa. Deep Creek are enthusiastic about making delicious, flavour fuelled beers. As well as the core range, they regularly brew seasonal and experimental beers and we are pretty excited to taste the beers which will be coming out of their barrel ageing programme. Head brewer Hamish also brews for Isthmus Brewing where he also makes fantastic beer, albeit less frequently. We caught up with the Deep Creek guys a few weeks ago, you can see our video interview HERE.
TASTING NOTES // This week we're drinking an old beer. Basilica has been patiently maturing in those huge bottles since 2013 and is now tasting pretty great. This is a classic rich porter with lots of smooth smoky, roast malt flavour and lots of body. The addition of Dutch cocoa is the perfect pairing to the chocolate profile already precent from the malt. We hope you take our advice and savour this beer with a friend as it is a meal in itself. Desert.
Luke took a bottle of Basilica along to drink on the bFM Wednesday Drivetime show a few weeks ago- the hosts helped us choose an 'aural match' for the beer and you can listen to what the reviewers thought HERE.
